October Newsletter

Aloha Everyone!
The biggest news here on the farm is that the extensive pineapple field is almost completely replanted. This would not have been possible without the hard work and devotion of Jesse Denny and the help of Marshall Baji and Garrett Carter. On top of this, we hope to support this work with a solar-powered electric fence meant to deter pigs as we lost about half of the harvest and plants in the bottom field to pig health. We look forward to a bountiful harvest in a few years and plenty, plenty plants to go out.

The biggest news in the nursery is the continued fight against the little fire ants(LFA). We are treating the nursery with Tango to sterilize the multiple queen ants of each colony and applying diatomaceous earth (crushed oyster shells) which inhibit the ants. The Tango process, which, if done correctly, sterilizes the queen ants, makes for the slow death of the colony because of old age, about four months. The diatomaceous earth suffocates the ants and causes them to go elsewhere for joy. We plan to reopen with a Winter Sale in January; then, each plant sold will go into a peanut butter quarantine of at least an hour to ensure that we are not spreading the ants. I encourage everyone to do a peanut butter test to check for the little fire ants, because you can hardly see them and they move so slowly. Make a perimeter of your house, your garden, your orchard and your property so that you can be sure that you do not have them. If you do, begin treatments about every 20 feet of the Tango and reinforce with the diatomaceous earth. ![]() The grafted tree nursery and pineapple patch.

We will have a mural painting party Saturday, October 24 from 3pm to 6pm. It is a community event, a faith event, an artistic event; but do not think that you need artistic ability to participate, only a faith in community. We need this time and togetherness to knit the fabric of our community back together after the destruction and trauma, physically, mentally and psychologically. If humans participated in LaLa as weaponized weather as it seems, they need to be tried as war criminals like at Nuremberg. We hope to have Earl Louis here to give a blessing as we all mourn with him the displacement of his ancestors. The ancestral spirit can never be disturbed. ![]() Fishing from the cliffs at South Point. By Maria Singleton.
